About the Date Difference
Pick two dates and see exactly what lies between them: days, weeks, months and years, and how many of those days are working days rather than weekends.
The include the end date switch matters more than it looks. Without it you get the number of nights — the way a hotel counts. With it you get the number of days you are away, the way a leave request counts. Both are correct answers to different questions, and getting the wrong one is how a booking ends up a day short.
Working days are counted as Monday to Friday. Public holidays are not deducted: they differ by country, region and year, and a tool that guessed at them would be confidently wrong far more often than it was useful. The weekday each date falls on is shown, which is usually enough to spot the holidays yourself.
The calendar breakdown counts whole months before leftover days, clamping to real dates — so 31 January to 1 March is one month and one day, not a negative number of days patched up afterwards. Dates can be entered in either order; the tool sorts them out and says so.
How to use the Date Difference
-
Choose the two dates
Order does not matter — if the end is before the start, the tool measures the gap anyway and tells you it swapped them.
-
Decide whether the end date counts
Leave it off to count nights, as a hotel booking does. Turn it on to count days spanned, as a leave request or a project schedule does.
-
Read the totals
Days, weeks and working days appear together, with the calendar breakdown in years, months and days beneath.
-
Check the weekdays
The tool names the day of the week each date falls on, which is how you spot the public holidays it deliberately does not guess at.
Frequently asked questions
Should I include the end date?
It depends what you are counting. From Monday to Friday there are four nights but five days. A hotel charges for four, a leave request uses five, and a project plan usually wants five. The switch exists because there is no way for the tool to know which question you are asking.
Why are public holidays not deducted from the working days?
Because they are different in every country, differ again by region within many of them, and move from year to year. A calculator that quietly assumed one country's calendar would give a wrong answer to most people using it. The weekday of each date is shown so you can subtract the ones that apply to you.
How are months counted when the dates are month ends?
Whole months are counted first, with the monthly anniversary clamped to a real date, then the leftover days are counted after that. So 31 January to 1 March is one month and one day, because one month after 31 January is the end of February. Subtracting day numbers directly gives a negative result that then has to be patched.
Does it handle leap years?
Yes, including the century rules that catch most implementations out: 2000 was a leap year, 1900 was not, and 2100 will not be. The day count is done with a calendar formula rather than by dividing by 365.25, so a span of a century is exact rather than a day or two out.
Is anything sent to a server?
No. The whole calculation happens in your browser, which is also why the answer does not shift with your time zone — the arithmetic is done on the numbers you typed, not on timestamps.
